The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.
