Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System in 2025.
The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the option to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
